New WAARDA books launched

Two new books in the Waarda series for young readers were launched on Friday 19 March during the All Saints Literature Festival.

Beach Sports Car, written by Darlene Oxenham, and Lilli and Her Shadow, co-written by Laura Dudgeon and Pat Dudgeon, are two new books in the Waarda series, edited by Sally Morgan.

The books were launched by Jill Milroy, Dean of the School of Indigenous Studies at UWA.

Jill said she was honoured to launch the books, and gave a lively reading from both Beach Sports Car and Lilli and her Shadow.

Authors Pat Dudgeon, Laura Dudgeon and Darlene Oxenham spoke about creating their stories. They encouraged kids to write their own stories and read widely, and especially to use their imagination.

The Waarda series for young readers brings stories by Indigenous writers to children in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities across Australia.

Guests at the launch included City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey, family and friends, media, and All Saints College students.

Many Fremantle Press children’s book authors and illustrators gave talks and workshops during the All Saints Literature Festival, held from 17-19 March at All Saints College.
