July is Fremantle Poetry Month

Fremantle Poetry Month kicks off for the second year running with a host of free events taking place across the city throughout July.

Fremantle Press Poetry Publisher Georgia Richter said 2011 was set to be even bigger with three new events, one new venue and four new sponsors.

“This year’s Fremantle Poetry Month will include more opportunities for the general public to be involved in person and online,” said Richter.

Thanks to new partnerships and collaborations, the month includes a ZiNeIORS workshop, browsing library and a mini-bookstore with Australian Poetry, an open mike session with Voicebox and a haiku-inspired art exhibition by creative writing students on Christmas Island.

“And for those living outside Perth, the month will include a weekly online session linking writers and readers with editors and poets from Fremantle Press, dotdotdash and Westerly,” said Richter.

Mayor of Fremantle, Brad Pettitt, will officially launch Fremantle Poetry Month as well as new books The Argument by Tracy Ryan, The Moving World by Michael Heald and Fremantle Poets 2: Two Poets by Andrew Lansdown and Kevin Gillam on 7 July 2011.

Richter said she was looking forward to showcasing the work of these talented Fremantle Press poets alongside performances by Amanda Joy, Liana Joy Christensen, Caitlin Maling and John Charles Ryan.

“It is wonderful to feel the community of poetry writers and readers coming together again for the second Fremantle Poetry Month launch,” said Richter.

Fremantle Poetry Month runs throughout July 2011. All events are free. For more information go to http://www.fremantlepress.com.au/ or find us on Facebook from 1 June at www.facebook.com/FremantlePress
