Helen Garner won the 2009 Barbara Jefferis Award, worth $35,000, for her novel The Spare Room on 27 March 2009. The award is given to the writer of "the best novel written by an Australian author that depicts women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empowers the status of women and girls in society".Fremantle Press author Alice Nelson was one of six novelists shortlisted for the award for her novel The Last Sky. The other shortlisted authors and books were: Geraldine Brooks, People of the Book (HarperCollins), Zacharey Jane, The Lifeboat (University of Queensland Press), Toni Jordan, Addition (Text) and Joan London, The Good Parents (Random House).
